A memorable evening was held by the Burns Howff Club in the Globe Inn on 27th January at the 131st Anniversary Dinner.
\nPresident Rab Walker welcomed the capacity gathering of members and guests and introduced the principal speaker, noted Burnsian Cameron Goodall from Midlothian.
\nIn proposing the toast to \u201cThe Immortal Memory\u201d of Robert Burns, Mr. Goodall stated that Scotland was unique in the world in revering one figure as Robert Burns as a song writer and poet. Whilst working as an Exciseman in Dumfries, he composed 310 songs and was also involved with the Scots Musical Museum. Robert Burns was the national voice of Scotland where England had none and over two centuries since his death, we owe him a debt of gratitude we can never hope to repay. The speaker received a standing ovation and was admitted an honorary member of the club. A lament was played by club piper Callum Watson and John Caskie MBE led the company in the community song \u201cA Man\u2019s a Man\u201d.
\nThe President toasted the Robert Burns World Federation and the immediate past president of the Federation , Ian McIntyre, gave the reply.
\nHonorary Secretary David Smith BEM, announced fraternal greetings from Burns Clubs from as far as St. Petersburg in Russia to all over Scotland.
\nRetired radiographer and club past president Colin Gibson toasted \u201cThe Lasses, O\u201d claiming that the Lasses had a great influence on Burns, from his mother Agnes and his first love Nellie Kirkpatrick which started him writing poetry to his wife Jean Armour who in Dumfries bore him nine children, the last being born on the day of his death. In a speech rich in humour, Mr. Gibson delighted the company with his insight into the poet\u2019s passionate nature.
\nCumnock boy Willie Dick recited the \u201cEpistle to Hugh Parker\u201d and music was supplied by James Coutts on the accordion and Roddy Matthews on the fiddle with songs from special guest Douglas Anderson. A hilarious recitation with props of \u201cThe Twa Dugs\u201d was given by Cameron Goodall and Willie Horne. Long serving Honorary Secretary who had announce he would be standing down this year after 48 years was appointed Honorary President and expressed his thanks for the great honour. David was presented with a framed ode and sketch composed by club bard John Clark.
\nThe Artistes were thanked by Junior Vice President Peter Hutchison and the Chairman <\/span><\/p>\n

was thanked by Immediate Past President Bill Graham. The Globe Inn staff were thanked for the superb meal and service throughout a splendid night.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Numerous members gathered at the Globe Inn on 18th December for the 2019 Christmas Dinner and were welcomed by President Rab Walker.<\/h2>\n

This was the first event in the sumptuous new private dining room upstairs and a magnificent traditional meal was served by Mhairi and her staff.<\/h2>\n

\u201cSecret Santa\u201d in the shape of Jane Brown arrived and dished out gifts to all then talented members provided some entertainment.<\/p>\n

Truly a night to remember.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
