6. JOHN BUSHBY

This obelisk built by John Bushby in memory of his father, peculiar only bearing his father’s name and that of another son, Thomas. For some years John Bushby, jnr. was an intimate friend of Robert Burns and then they became estranged. John Bushby’s, jun’s. tomb is unknown.  Burns, in an ill-tempered mood, wrote the well known epitaph :-

 “Here lies John Bushby - honest man

  Cheat him, Devil - if you can !”
